Based upon Marvel Comics' most non-traditional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves accelerated healing powers to him, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Gods of Eddie the Eagle, Egypt, and Triple 9 all flopped in their opening weekends, making the continuing box office success of Ryan Reynolds' foul-mouthed superhero all the more staggering. We understood that there were two performers involved with bringing Colossus to life in Deadpool: Andre Tricoteux supplied the mo cap functionality for the larger-than-life X Men character, while Stefan Kapicic provided his heavily-accented voice.

It is no real surprise that the teams hired to bring a property like Deadpool to the screen learn just how to keep the machine oiled and humming; it's the ones who somehow manage to temporarily stick a wrench in the works, adding something human -- a feeling instead of another quip -- who are worth your attention. Deadpool topped the box office for the 3rd weekend in a row, which can be an impressive accomplishment for virtually any film...but it helps when your entire competition arrives with a thud.

For a movie that vocally questions tradition, it is perhaps a shame that Miller and co. played it so safe using a pretty cookie cutter origin story, but it is really only there to give Reynolds ammunition to riff on. Whether the studio could not be unwilling to shove the character further to the leftfield later on will depend on whether sequels are warranted by Deadpool.
