Based upon Marvel Comics' most unusual antihero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected into a rogue experiment that leaves him with healing powers that are gifted, embraces the alter ego Deadpool. Gods of Egypt, Eddie the Eagle, and Triple 9 all flopped within their opening weekends, making the sustained box office victory of Ryan Reynolds' foul-mouthed superhero all the more staggering. We understood that there were two celebrities involved with bringing Colossus Andre Tricoteux supplied the mocap functionality for the larger-than-life X Men character, while his was provided by Stefan Kapicic heavily-accented voice.

It is no surprise the teams hired to bring a property like Deadpool to the screen learn just how to keep the machine oiled and humming; it's the ones who somehow manage to briefly stick a wrench in the works, adding something human -- a feeling instead of another quip -- who are worth your attention. Deadpool topped the box office for the 3rd weekend in a row, which is an impressive accomplishment for any picture...but it helps when your entire competition arrives using a thud.

For a film that vocally questions tradition, it is maybe a shame that Miller and co. played it so safe using a pretty cookie cutter origin story, but it's actually just there to give Reynolds ammo to riff on.
