'Inside Out' Is Just As Mental With No Peek Inside Riley's Mind

On paper, Inside Out " sounded like another lunatic risk: an adventure that takes place entirely within the head of an 11-year old girl, featuring her Emotions as characters -- although if anyone could pull off a logline like that, it might be the team that made us care about rats who cook, toys that bond, and robots who fall in love. The narrative centers on an 11-year-old girl named Riley Andersen moving to her five emotions and San Francisco Despair, Happiness, Fear, Disgust and Fury trying to help her cope with her new life. Around them stretches the vast landscape of Riley's consciousness, having a train of thought smoking through it at unpredictable intervals, and also other characters wandering about, such as Bing Bong (Richard Kind), an imaginary friend from Riley's past, who weeps candies, and a fantastic, floppy-haired boyfriend from her future (I 'd die for Riley," he says).

Docter and Del Carmen appear to have reached into Disney's past for inspiration, seizing to the 1950s-era style seen in shorts like Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" (plump, bespectacled Despair seems just like that Oscar winner's Professor Owl host), too as then-rival UPA's more theoretical cartoon aesthetic (Panic resembles Gerald McBoing-Boing's father, while an insane shortcut to Imagination Land espouses such deconstructionism outright). The script pokes fun at these various laws with the characters literally consult brain manuals"--something the audience will not demand, happily, as the picture is mostly efficient, in that blessedly breezy Pixar way, at keeping the plot humming along.

Amusingly fleet glances to the thoughts of other characters imply everyone is cabled more or less the same style, while still allowing for wild variation in the efficiency of the five Emotions they have been dealt. Like all of us, Riley is led by her Emotions -- Sadness, Anxiety, Anger, Disgust and Joy. Meanwhile, Joy and Depression encounter Bing Bong, Riley's childhood imaginary friend He tells them they can get to Headquarters by riding the train of thought After exploring Riley's head, the three eventually catch the train, but it is derailed when among the character islands collapses when Riley steals a charge card from her mom's bag, leaving Happiness and Sadness distraught. Riley arrives home and bursts into tears, confessing that she misses her old life as Despair reinstalls the core memories.

It is a long way back, as the brain geography crumbles around them, and in the interim, Riley's mental state starts to unravel with Anxiety, Anger and Disgust left in control, unwisely deciding that the very best thought is for Riley to run away. Disgust, Sadness, Fear, Anger and joy weren't the only emotions seeking starring roles in Pixar's Inside Out.

It's not quite as moving as those movies but it's A-level Pixar, filled with Depression and Happiness. Fans of puzzle games will love trying to locate hidden letters in 3D scenes in the feature film.
