Inside Out Festival

On paper, Inside Out " sounded like another lunatic risk: an experience that takes place entirely inside the head of an 11-year-old girl, featuring her Emotions as characters -- although if anyone could pull off a logline that way, it might be the team that got us care about rats who cook, playthings that bond, and robots who fall in love. The story centers on an 11-year old girl named Riley Andersen moving to San Francisco and her five emotions Despair, Happiness, Fear, Disgust and Fury trying to help her cope with her new life. Around them stretches the vast landscape of Riley's consciousness, having a train of thought dragging through it at unpredictable periods, and also other characters roaming about, for example Bing Bong (Richard Kind), an imaginary friend from Riley's past, who weeps candies, and an imaginary, floppy-haired boyfriend from her future (I 'd die for Riley," he says).

Docter and Del Carmen seem to have reached into Disney's past for inspiration, seizing about the 1950s-era fashion seen in shorts like Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" (plump, bespectacled Misery seems just like that Oscar winner's Professor Owl host), too as then-rival UPA's more abstract animation aesthetic (Fear resembles Gerald McBoing-Boing's dad, while an insane shortcut to Imagination Land espouses such deconstructionism outright). The script pokes fun at these various laws by having the characters literally consult brain guides"--something the audience will not need, happily, as the picture is largely efficient, in that blessedly breezy Pixar manner, at keeping the storyline humming along.

Amusingly swift glimpses to the heads of other characters imply everyone is wired more or less the same way, while allowing for crazy variation in the efficiency of the five Emotions they've been dealt. Like all of us, her Emotions -- Sadness, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Joy guide Riley. Meanwhile, Joy and Sadness meeting Bing Bong, Riley's childhood imaginary friend He tells them they can get to Headquarters by riding the train of thought After investigating Riley's head, the three eventually catch the train, but it truly is derailed when one of the personality isles collapses when Riley steals a charge card from her mom's purse, leaving Happiness and Despair distraught. Riley arrives home and bursts into tears, admitting that she misses her old life, as Despair reinstalls the core memories.
