This superhero flick earned its R rating and gleefully revels in its independence to reap the benefits of that.
For an 11-year old creeping into the theater for his first R-rated film, Deadpool could prove to be a trip that is revelatory. Deadpool earns every bit of its R rating, a quality that is certain to appeal to devotees weary of the butch, apple-pie-eating, altruistic superheroes who buck for attention in the comic book stables. The two of them exist mostly to keep Deadpool in line, as well as to help him combat Ajax and his impossibly strong lieutenant, Angel Dust (Gina Carano). Parents are advised not to bring their children to the excursion, however much they may break your 4th wall to get one to take them to see it. The movie is replete with foul language, continuous crass jokes frequently highly sexualized, (option) sex scenes and full frontal nudity, hyper violence and blood and gore. But Batman v. Superman isn't going to hinge its psychological climax on a joke about face sitting, and Deadpool is all the better for taking that form of leap. The message is brutally clear: Deadpool is not here to save humanity or anything almost so exalted. It also validates the new paths a superhero movie can take, while Deadpool is going to wildly further the aspirations of the very machine it lampooned. I should have recognized I was in trouble when the audience was essentially full of 16-20 year old boys!
Then as quickly as the sex scenes that are frenzied, now he has cancer as well as the mood of the movie becomes too serious and melodramatic. The bad guys that Deadpool kills do not expire sanitary deaths like they do in PG-13 superhero movies--they splatter onto billboards and Crisis between cars, with their bowels and brains spilling out of their bodies. Loaded with sex, sass, and sadistic violence, Deadpool isn't your kid's comic-book origin story. The movie exists completely as a star vehicle for Reynolds, and maybe its canniest stroke is the way it both conceals and demolishes his physical attractiveness -- a small price to pay when an actor's tongue is not this gloriously blunt. But first-time feature director Tim Miller's film functions as a good example of what ails the movie industry that is superhero as well critique. The tightly-wound storyline is a refreshing antidote to the operatic world-saving of each and every superhero movie. DEADPOOL makes all another superhero characters seem like relics from the 1950s - except the Black Widow.
